Geoffroy C. Dedenis

Geoffroy C. Dedenis is a visual artist based in Paris, creating films, videos, texts and mixed-media montages ranging from experimental to narrative. His audiovisual productions investigate (homo)sexual desire, love, happiness, emptiness, and alienation. His work embraces the experiences of the reluctantly acknowledged, more often pointed at than addressed to. G.C.D. digs in and amplifies the viewpoints of outcasts, melting the social body into sensual flesh.
In 2017, he completed his first short-film, Why I Want to Fuck Djokhar Tsarnaev, which was granted by a special award at the Festival du Film de Fesses.
G.C.D. shot his first narrative essai A Crown of Thorns, in 2020, and finally had the opportunity to be financed by the prestigious association Le G.R.E.C. for his last short film, ABADDON.
In 2023 La Cinémathèque française included two of his shorts for its big summer event “L’Image des plaisirs, Sexpérimentaux“.
Geoffroy C. Dedenis stares at the aggressive aspects of lust — which hegemonies try to forget, if not fetishize, while soothing their conscience with performative allyship and token gestures — to make them bloom into epiphanies where the sleazy meets the sacred.

Works
Abaddon (2024) – 4.5 stars
by Tony Moore, Indy Film Library, April 21, 2025
“Geoffroy C. Dedenis is a young French director who has previously made several short films. For the enigmatically titled short feature Abaddon, Dedenis obtained funding from an arts organisation — the production values are superb throughout. As to the title, it might be an arcane cultural reference which I am not familiar with or even a play on English language street argot — a bad ‘un — I am none the wiser.
Abaddon is a challenging piece of work that involves a graphic depiction of self-harm. For IFL readers who feel they would be uncomfortable with the subject matter, I would suggest that they might be best to not watch the film and not read on as this review will discuss the self-harm sequence in some detail.
The movie depicts events in the life of Gaspard, a young gay man who sells sex for money — as the story unfolds this attribute appears to be a key part of Gaspard’s identity. Gaspard is played by Romi Debart who puts in a strong performance — so strong that even though the script portrays the character as somewhat unpleasant Debart makes the audience empathise with them.
The director uses three techniques to build the picture. There is an omniscient narrator who tells us Gaspard’s inner thought processes, flashback scenes involving Gaspard’s childhood experiences and graphic depictions of three sexual encounters that the character undertakes. The latter are intended to illustrate Gaspard’s emotional response to sexual desire and to human relationships.
Dedenis weaves the strands together so adroitly that after watching Abaddon, I felt as though I had read a tightly paced, beautifully written novella. Astonishingly, Dedenis successfully inserts into the story two non-human actors that I came to be fascinated by — Gaspard’s bedsit where almost all the action takes place and a malfunctioning fridge.“

L’IMAGE DES PLAISIRS : SEXPÉRIMENTAUX
The French Cinémathèque includes two of Geoffroy C. Dedenis shorts, Why I Want to Fuck Djokhar Tsarnaev and Survival of the Sickest to the program concocted by Nicole Brenez and Luc Vialle, focusing on the power of images in times of oppression, repression or denial. Words of the sexually exploited, confidences of sexual minorities or powerful love poems, “the image of pleasures” seen as a political weapon or as an opportunity to reveal oneself.

PLUS JEUNES ET PLUS BEAUX ABCD HONORÉ

For the letter “D” for Desire of his ABC, filmmaker Christophe Honoré asked Léolo and Mathieu Morel to compile a selection of contemporary gay shorts. This cycle, entitled “Plus jeune et plus beaux“, is a tribute to films in which homosexuality is presented as marginal or subversive, a theme the filmmaker wishes to highlight. The program ended with an evening at the Silencio, an opportunity to revisit and discover new films.
Among them, and introduced in relation to authors such as Gregg Araki, Jean Genet or Kenneth Anger, who have staged provocateurs and rebels, personifying dissident lust and an aesthetic of disorder, was the work of Geoffroy Christ Dedenis, a young artist whose experimental films explore themes where violence mingles with desire.
His film Why I Want to Fuck Djokhar Tsarnaev is a singular work that blends contemporary events with consideration of beauty in relation to monstrosity. Dedenis explains that this project arose from absorbing streams of information, including the Boston bombings and many other traumatic incidents, incorporating them into his artistic rethinking. The result is a work that questions the fascination with criminal figures and the complex drive that stems from them.
Also screened was A Permanent Part of Me, a film that explores the figure of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer as a means of investigating wickedness and soulless fulfillment, tackling disturbing questions about the darker side of sexuality.
